PYP IB Coordinator

Golestan is looking to hire a loving and experienced IB Coordinator to be responsible for the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Organization’s Primary Years Program (PYP) at Golestan School to start as soon as possible.  We are looking for someone who values collaboration, is creative, and is open to different ideas and trying new things.  Must be deeply kind and collaborative. The PYP Coordinator will establish school-wide processes to support our teaching staff and promote the fundamental concepts of the IB Program. 

Pedagogical Leadership & Professional Development

  • Identify professional development opportunities for staff including: workshops, site visits, curriculum development
  • Organize on-site and online professional development related to the PYP
  • Provide induction to the PYP for new PYP teachers. 
  • Support and mentor new PYP teachers in the classroom
  • Lead grade-level plan meetings at least once per week
  • Support specialist teachers and their inclusion within the PYP and the planning process
  • Assist teams in developing units of inquiry
  • Assist teams in the revision of the POI as needed
  • Encourage an inquiry-based transdisciplinary learning environment within the school community (MTS)
  • Support grade 5 teachers in the facilitation of the Exhibition
  • Keep a record of workshop and site-visit participation

Documentation & Resource Management

  • Provide staff access to information published by the IBO
  • Promote staff use of the Online Curriculum Center (OCC)
  • Help determine and order resources to support the implementation of the PYP
  • Make recommendations concerning resource needs to support the implementation of the PYP
  • Ensure that the school´s assessment policy, reports, language policy, and unit planners are regularly reviewed and updated
  • Provide staff access to information published by the IBO
  • Ensure that teachers keep long-range plans for the PYP up to date.  
  • Prepare and submit any documentation required for authorization and evaluation. 
  • Ensure that all requirements and procedures set by the IB concerning the programme are adhered to.

The ideal candidate must

-be currently eligible to work in the United States (Golestan School will not sponsor work visas)

– have a trans-disciplinary perspective for fully integrated hands on, inquiry-based, child centered approach to teaching

– have a minimum of two years experience teaching elementary grades

– have knowledge of theories and practices of early child development, specifically stages of social/moral development and early literacy/math conceptual development

– have a bachelor’s degree (advanced degree, preferred)

– have IB certification

– have a deep love of experiential outdoor learning 

– have a hunger for learning (themselves) and teaching (kids) 

– embody the school values of kindness, mindfulness and courage through direct, open, honest and gentle communication with colleagues, students and families

– be familiar with Common Core State Standards 

– be organized

– be open to feedback 

– be open to creating an unconventional classroom environment that is uncluttered, simple, and beautiful

– be innovative and willing/able to think outside the box

– be able to create community among students, families, and colleagues

– be deeply kind, warm, nurturing, and empathetic

– be passionate about developing their own curriculum and integrating with the IB framework in collaboration with colleagues across disciplines and language tracks

– be comfortable in a fluid and dynamic startup environment

Preferred qualities

– experience teaching PreK- 5 

– advanced degree in education

– multiple-subject teaching credential

– an affinity for the Socratic method and a constructivist approach

– experience with developing emergent curriculum

– experience teaching language learners using best practices for second language acquisition

– native fluency in a second or third language

– experience living in other countries

Our environment is very intimate and hands on, both with the children and with our colleagues.  We work very closely together across grades in a very loving, positive, and family-like setting.
